FAQs

  • How did the Logie Awards get their name?

In 1959, the year TV WEEK introduced the awards, they didn't have a name. The winners of the top honour, Graham Kennedy and Panda Lisner, were simply referred to as "TV Stars of the Year". The following year, Graham suggested the name Logie, from the middle name of John Logie Baird, the Scottish inventor of television - though he later joked he should have named them after himself.

  • Who designed the statue?

It was Alec De Lacy, from Melbourne trophy makers KG Luke Ltd. His design has been tweaked slightly over the years.

  • Does the list of awards change from year to year?

Yes. TV WEEK reviews the categories - as well as the voting process - each year. In the early days, Logies were given out in categories such as "best singer", "best comedian" and "best commercial", which was often won by cigarette ads. State awards were given out for many years, finally being eliminated in 1993. The Logie for Most Popular Reality Program was introduced in 2000 (RPA won it that year), and the Graham Kennedy Award For Most Outstanding New Talent in 2006.

  • Who comes up with the list of programs and people to vote on?

All TV networks - that's free-to-air, pay and community channels - are invited to submit programs and personalities. TV WEEK reviews the submissions, and then Roy Morgan, Australia's longest-established public opinion survey company, creates the voting survey. It's a very comprehensive list, so chances are, you'll find the person or the program you want on it.

  • What’s the difference between “popular” and “outstanding” awards?

"Popular" awards are voted by the public, while "outstanding" awards are voted by the TV industry. TV WEEK assembles panels of up to 10 independent industry experts to judge each category.

  • How do some people know the winners before the telecast has aired?

The telecast is always slightly delayed - to allow it to be edited into a tighter, better show - which means that the guests at the event know the winners before people watching at home, but they are asked not to spoil the surprise. As well, in the past, some journalists were given an embargoed list of winners before they were announced, to help them meet their deadlines.

  • Who has won the most Gold Logies?

The late Graham Kennedy. He won six, if you count the first Gold Logie ever handed out, before it was called a Logie.

  • What program has won the most Logies?

No surprise here - it's the long-running and very popular soapie Home And Away, with 38 wins.
