One Direction perform (2012)

Parents of teenage girls wouldn't have been surprised at what happened when One Direction turned up to the 2012 TV WEEK Logie Awards, but for everyone else, the experience was eye-opening - not to mention eardrum-shattering. Girls from across the nation had been staking out positions outside Melbourne's Crown Casino for up to 24 hours beforehand, and some had gone without food - just to get a glimpse of the world's biggest boy band. When the fab five finally made their appearance, the screaming could probably have been heard back in London, where the band is based. Every other celebrity on the red carpet at that moment suddenly felt very unimportant. 

Karl Stefanovic drunk on Today after the Logies (2009)

When Karl Stefanovic co-hosted Today the morning after the 2009 Logies - having had a few drinks at the afterparties and no sleep - he had no idea so many people were going to end up seeing it. Karl's "under the weather" performance became a YouTube hit, and ended up featuring on Today Tonight. "I've told everyone that I was pretty embarrassed by it and I was sorry if anyone was offended by my actions on that particular day," Karl said. But, most people didn't seem to be - he won the Gold Logie two years later.

The Chaser's Chas Licciardello going up for Blue Water High win (2006)

There was one question on everyone's lips at the 2006 Logies: who is that guy? Chas Licciardello from The Chaser's War On Everything had taken on a challenge - to appear in the background at least 20 times during the Logies telecast, acting like a "bonehead" - and when he achieved his target easily, he decided to tag along with the stars of Blue Water High when they went up on stage to accept their Logie. Even Chas seemed stunned with what he got away with that night. The following year, security didn't take their eyes off the Chaser boys.    

Steve Irwin's snake biting Tim Webster (2003)

You might expect to go home from the Logies with a headache, sore feet or a bruised ego, but you wouldn't be expecting a snakebite. However, in 2003, sports presenter Tim Webster was left with puncture marks and a bruise on his thigh after being bitten by a snake being handled by the late crocodile hunter, Steve Irwin. "I'm assuming it was all part of Steve's routine because he was trying to get the thing to bite Eddie [McGuire] and tried to convince him it was a tiger snake," said Tim, who took the bite as graciously as could be expected. 

Joan Rivers swearing and throwing a Logie (2006)

Joan Rivers's few minutes on stage at the 2006 Logies left everyone stunned - including, by the looks of it, her co-presenter, Richard Wilkins. Sounding like she was veering wildly off script, the foul-mouthed seventy-something claimed she didn't know why she was at the Logies or who anyone was, thanked John Wood for his performance in bed the previous night ("You've got a trick pelvis and Australia should know it") and then, when presented with a specially made pink Logie, tossed it away, declaring, "It's the ugliest award I have ever seen." Thank you and good night!

Karl Stefanovic's Logie acceptance speech (2011)

It's customary to thank your spouse when you win an award. But, to use the occasion to praise a certain part of her anatomy? That's... well, different. When Karl won the most popular presenter Logie in 2011 - before going on to win Gold - he informed everyone that his wife, Cas, had "the best arse I have ever seen". While some in the room appreciated his humour, others didn't, with Better Homes And Gardens presenter Johanna Griggs later giving him a stern telling-off: "Karl, we don't have bum and boobs jokes - it's just nice family viewing."

Gretel Killeen hosting from a swing (2009)

Gretel Killeen died at the 2009 Logies. That's not a comment on her performance as host (although many would agree), it's just a description of one of her skits where she was shot dead. That skit was followed by one where she was, bizarrely, lowered onto the stage on a swing, supposedly from heaven. But, perhaps a skit set in hell might have been more appropriate. The former Big Brother presenter was so deeply wounded by all the criticism she received for her stint as Logies host, she retreated from show business for several years.

Bert Newton offending Muhammad Ali (1979)

This has to be the most infamous Logies moment ever. Bert Newton was bantering away with boxing legend Muhammad Ali, and joked to the audience, "I like the boy," not realising the racist implications of what he'd said. Ali reacted in disbelief, and looked for a moment like he was going to land one of his famous punches on Bert. But, the boxer soon recovered, and got one up on Bert by bagging the Gold Logie with this poem: "I love the award, I like your style, but this gift is so cheap, I won't see you for a while."

PJ Lane singing a tribute to his late father, Don (2010)

With Don Lane being a giant of Australian television, it was obvious his death would need to be commemorated in a special way at the Logies. But, no one was expecting such a touching tribute. Don's son PJ got up on stage to talk about him ("Everyone loved my dad") and then sang a song, while old footage of Don played. At the end, the backdrop behind PJ opened to reveal many of the people who had worked with Don over the years, including Bert Newton. It got a standing ovation.

Mr G's dance routine (2008)

There have been many musical performances at the Logies over the past 50-odd years, but it's pretty safe to say there's only been one involving gigantic ecstasy tablets. The star was Summer Heights High drama teacher Mr G (Chris Lilley), performing songs from the musical he wrote about student Annabel Dickson, who died of a drug overdose. He was joined on stage by his "crippled freak" dog Celine, Toby and the special dancers, pole-dancing high school students, and those giant ecstasy tablets and syringes. Anyone who wasn't a fan of Summer Heights High would surely have been dumbfounded.

Kath and Kim performance (2004)

Who could forget this dazzling dance routine by Gina Riley and Jane Turner, the girls behind Australia's favourite mother and daughter duo, Kath and Kim?

Dame Edna meeting Ita Buttrose (1981)

We would have loved to have been a fly on the wall when Dame Edna (Barry Humphries) had a quite moment with the very glamorous Ita Buttrose.

Sammy Davis Jr lighting up on stage with Bert Newton (1978)

Perhaps this moment didn't seem so shocking at the time, but looking back on it now, it's jaw-dropping. Legendary American entertainer Sammy Davis Jr was up on stage with Bert Newton to announce Graham Kennedy as the winner of the Gold Logie... all the while, casually puffing away on a ciggie. Of course, he was Sammy Davis Jr, so no one was going to tap him on the shoulder and tell him to stop smoking - unfortunately. Twelve years later, he died of throat cancer.

Reg Reagan and Bud Tingwell (2006)

We are sure the beer guzzling Reg Reagan (alter ego of Matthew Johns) would have kept the late Charles "Bud" Tingwell on his toes during this encounter.

Ray Martin with B1 and B2 (1994)

Respected newsman Ray Martin became the third banana during this hilarious pairing at the TV WEEK Logie Awards in 1994.­­­
